HAMISH ROBERTSON

AUCKLAND MMA – HEAD COACH

Coach Hamish Robertson Auckland MMA Gamm

Hamish Robertson was born New Zealand and has also lived in the UK and Australia. He has extensive experience training and fighting locally and internationally in a number of combat sports including BJJ, SJJ, submission grappling, kickboxing and MMA.

Hamish began his MMA training on the Gold Coast 1997-99 with Kerry Dunne at Shindo before moving to the UK. When he returned in 2002 to Brisbane he began BJJ with Darren McKean who was under the Gracie Barra Banner. In 2003 he moved back to New Zealand and started to train at Strikeforce West Auckland under Aaron Boyes in Kickboxing and Neil Swailes in MMA.

In MMA Hamish fought in New Zealand, Australia and Japan. In his second to last fight he was taken to Japan to compete in an MMA bout on the Deep show against a Pride veteran Yasuhito Namekawa who had fought some of the biggest names in MMA over his 8-year career. The last fight he had was against Brian Ebersole in Australia, who had more than 75 fights, Brian went on to fight in the UFC.

Hamish was graded to Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by Marcello Rezende of Gracie Barra in Sydney in 2006 and then to Purple Belt by Steve Oliver of Gracie Barra West Auckland in 2011, then to Brown Belt in 2015 by Steve Oliver.

Hamish was awarded his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by Professor Pina Simpson of Tsunami Southern Tribes in March 2022

​

He has competed in BJJ tournaments in New Zealand and Australia. Also, he has represented New Zealand at the ADCC Trials in Australia in 2005 and 2007, which is the biggest submission grappling event in Australasia, and the IBJJF World Champs in Los Angeles in 2010.

Hamish started coaching in 2007 as head coach of Faith MMA where he trained a number of MMA fighters who fought in Australia and New Zealand. In 2010 Hamish started Auckland MMA with his wife Van and since then has trained many fighters including several champions.

Hamish has a great deal of experience on the gym floor having worked for a number of gyms in Auckland doing gym instruction and also personal training. He has extensive experience writing programs to fit client’s specific needs whether you are training to keep fit or compete as an elite athlete on an international level.

​

Hamish has also helped a number of rugby and rugby league teams with wrestling and conditioning in pre-season including the Kiwi’s before world cup 2013, under 18 NZ Rugby league team and the Warriors.

​

He has also helped to prepare World Champion Waka Ama paddler Vesna Radonich in strength and conditioning for many races using kettlebells over a 3-year period.
