Congratulations to AMMA fighter Matt Hazleman in his debut MMA bout last Saturday at ICNZ 12 at the North Shore Event Centre. Matt won by guillotine submission in round 2 over Gareth Nel of Integrated Fighting. The match was scheduled for 3 three-minute rounds of B-class MMA.

The fight was exciting from the starting bell. Nel had a large fan base in the audience cheering loudly for him, but our little cheerful but boisterous AMMA crowd made themselves heard quite well. Nel was very aggressive with the hands and tried to keep the match standing. Matt played a calm but strategic game feeling him out and taking Nel to the ground where possible. Then he worked out Nel’s weak point and started to score with leg kicks. When he saw his opportunity, Matt secured a tight guillotine and jumped guard to gain the victory.

Some of our AMMA fighters decided to try their skills at this year’s Ssireum NZ team trials in Auckland today. Ssireum is the traditional national sport of Korea. In the modern form each contestant wears a belt that wraps around the waist and the thigh. The competition employs a series of techniques, which inflict little harm or injury to the opponent: opponents lock on to each other’s belt, and one achieves victory by being first to bring any part of the opponent’s body above the knee to the ground.
